Some of you don’t believe me when I say that us coffee growers breathe and live coffee every second of our lives. In this video of the series “See What´s Behind Colombian Coffee”, you can see all the meanings Colombian Coffee has for us, while I´m talking with a coffee growing friend and enjoying a warm cup.

Hace unas semanas tuve la oportunidad de estar en la ceremonia de clausura del Curso Internacional de Catadores donde profesionales japoneses de la industria del café vinieron a Colombia conocer más de nuestro producto.
Al final de la ceremonia llegué a saludarlos y pude hablar con uno de los participantes: Teppei Kida.

Me doy cuenta no sólo con este evento, sino también en mi viaje a China y Japón, que las personas de esos países siempre tienen cosas buenas que decir del café colombiano y siempre se sorprenden por el valor agregado que encuentran en él. Para mí el hecho de que muchas personas alrededor del mundo digan sólo cosas buenas de nuestro café es un motivo de orgullo porque es un reconocimiento a todo el esfuerzo y trabajo de los cafeteros del país.

At the closing ceremony of the International Mild Coffee Training Course

A few weeks ago I had the chance to be at the closing ceremony of the International Mild Coffee Training Course where professionals of the coffee industry from Japan came to Colombia to learn more about our product. At the end of the ceremony I stopped by to say hello to the group  and I got the chance to talk to Teppei Kida.

I realized not only in this event but also with my previous trip to China and Japan that people in these countries always have nice things to say about Colombian Coffee and they are surprised by the added value they find in it. The fact that many people around the world has nothing but good things to say about our coffee is a reason for me to feel proud because is a recognition to all of the effort and work of the coffee growers in the country.

El fin de semana pasado se celebró el VII Campeonato Nacional de Baristas, y estoy muy orgulloso de Ronald Valero ya que después de llegar a la final logró demostrar su experiencia y conocimiento al preparar dentro de los 15 minutos reglamentarios cuatro espressos, cuatro capuccinos y su bebida diseñada, dejando muy buena impresión no sólo en los jueces y asistentes al campeonato sino a sus colegas baristas

Yo tuve la oportunidad de conocerlo y sé que es un joven con mucha pasión por el café y muy talentoso. Le deseo lo mejor en el Campeonato Mundial de Baristas en Australia y le encomiendo dejar en alto el nombre de Café de Colombia pero especialmente el trabajo de todos los cafeteros al preparar un café que refleja la calidad de nuestro producto.

This past weekend the VII Colombian Barista Championship was held, and I am very proud of Ronald Valero because after getting to the finals he managed to demonstrate his knowledge and expertise preparing within his 15 minutes of competition four espressos, four cappuccinos and his signature drink impressing not only the judges and the audience but also his fellow baristas

I had the chance to meet him and I know that he is a very talented young man full of passion for coffee. I wish him the best at the World Barista Championship in Australia and I entrust him to represent Colombian Coffee but especially the work of all our coffee growers when preparing a coffee that reflects the quality of our product.

En este momento estoy en temporada de floración y quise compartir con ustedes fotos de cómo se ven las flores del cafeto en mi finca.

Primero voy a explicarles un poco sobre este tema porque sé que no todos lo conocen muy bien. Esta etapa se da alrededor de tres meses con una floración por mes. Cada una de ellas muestra lo que se va a ver en la recolección meses después porque cada flor será un grano. Por ejemplo, yo siempre soy muy organizado con mis cultivos y llevo un cuaderno de apuntes conmigo para anotar cuando se abren las flores porque así sé que cerca de nueve meses después aparecen los frutos y hasta puedo calcular el día y programarme. Por los lados de mi finca hay una buena floración porque el clima también ha ayudado, llueve pero también hay días con buen sol; por eso sé que lo que se viene es bueno. Menos mal no se han venido tormentas porque sería un riesgo grande porque daña las flores y después se disminuye la cantidad de granos.

Entonces como pueden ver en estas fotos esta época es un espectáculo, visualmente es muy lindo y también huele muy bueno. Y es que el aroma que se siente desde lejos hace que todos los cafetales se llenen de esperanza y motivación para trabajar con más ánimo y seguir luchando porque uno sabe que habrá  buena recolección. Ese aroma no sólo me genera tranquilidad sino que me remite a mi infancia y me trae buenos recuerdos cuando me la pasaba en la finca de mi papá. Y bueno en general estoy muy contento porque hay buena cantidad de flores y en nueve meses estaré viendo bastante cosecha en la finca.

Flowering season

I am currently in flowering season and I wanted to share with you some pictures of what the coffee flowers look like on my farm.

First I’ll explain a little bit about this topic because I know that not everyone knows about it very well. This stage goes for around three months with one flowering per month. Each one of them tells the approximate amount of harvest there will be in the upcoming months because each flower is a bean that will grow. Because of this I´m very organized with my crops and   keep a journal where I write down when the flowers open so that way I know that nine months after the coffee cherries appear and I can schedule myself. There is a good flowering in my farm right now because the weather has helped with sporadic rains and sunny days. Luckily, there hasn´t been any storms or heavy rain because that risks the next harvest since the flowers get damaged.

As you can see in the pictures this season is quite spectacular, it’s visually amazing and also smells really good. The aroma can be smelled from the distance which fills the coffee plantations with hope and motivation to work with the best attitude because I know there is going to be a good harvest. The aroma not only gives me peace but it also takes me back to my childhood and brings good memories from when I was at my father´s farm.  Overall, I´m really glad for the great amount of flowers because in nine months I´ll be seeing a good harvest.

See What´s Behind Colombian Coffee:  How does a coffee grower dress?

In this second video of the series See What’s Behind Colombian Coffee I want to show everyone the clothes of Colombian coffee growers and its importance in the day to day tasks in the farm. I hope that in this video you get to see what´s behind our wardrobe.

Este año tuve la fortuna de estar en la largada del Rally Dakar 2013 apoyando a dos competidores colombianos, Juan Manuel Linares y Andrés Campuzano. La verdad es que yo al principio entendía de qué se trataba la competencia pero no la conocía, pero yo sabía que eso del Dakar debía ser parecido a las carreras de bicicletas que uno ve en caravana acá por toda Colombia pero con carros y motos.

Primero me encontré con los competidores colombianos del Dakar 2013 en el aeropuerto antes de ir a Perú. Cuando llegamos al hotel en Lima a las dos de la mañana, me impresionó la cantidad de turistas llegando de todo el mundo y la verdad es que fue todo muy bonito y organizado, pasé una buena noche. A eso de las 6:30 de la mañana me alisté en mi traje y salí al punto de la playa en donde se encuentran todos los equipos en revisión técnica. Al llegar a la largada me sentí muy orgulloso porque la gente en Perú me reconocía y también porque estaba acompañando a los competidores en nombre del café colombiano ya que ellos representan valores muy parecidos a los de los mismos cafeteros.

Ese día fue muy emocionante, caminamos por los corredores en donde estaban realizando las pruebas técnicas a los carros, camiones, cuatrimotos y motos, eran impresionantes esos camiones tan grandes y poderosos. Es increíble pensar que todos esos vehículos deben pasar por el desierto; es un trabajo bien difícil. Aquí conocí a varios colombianos que iban a participar en la competencia en motos y también pude conocer al director del Dakar. Caminamos un poco por la zona en donde estaba el vehículo de Café de Colombia que ya estaba listo para la competencia y me llamó la atención como la gente al verme me buscaba sin importar su nacionalidad, lo que más se sentía era un ambiente de camaradería muy bonito.

Cuando volví me enteré que Juan Manuel Linares y Andrés Campuzano habían salido de la competencia por una falla mecánica y no pudieron terminar. Pero eso me hace recordar de todas las veces que por más que uno se esfuerce por hacer las cosas bien hay factores que se salen de control y pueden afectar los resultados. De igual forma siempre queda la perseverancia y osadía de estos competidores que seguro volverán a intentarlo en la próxima vuelta.

Lastimosamente no tuve tiempo de salir a conocer Perú, siendo mi primera vez ahí, pero quiero volver para conocerlo porque sé que hay cosas muy bonitas en el país. Sin embargo disfruté mucho del poco tiempo que estuve en el Dakar, acompañar a nuestros competidores colombianos me anima a seguir haciendo las cosas bien y apoyar a las personas que comparten los mismos valores de nuestros cafeteros colombianos.

At the Dakar Rally 2013

This year I was lucky to be in the opening of the Dakar Rally 2013 supporting two Colombian competitors, Juan Manuel Linares and Andrés Campuzano. The truth is that at first I understood what it was all about but I didn’t knew about the rally specifically, although I knew the Dakar should be similar as the bicycle races I see in the roads of Colombia but with cars and motorcycles.

First of all, I met with the Colombian competitors of the Dakar 2013 at the airport before we flew to Perú. When we arrived at the hotel in Lima at two in the morning I was really impressed by the amount of tourists arriving from all over the world and because it was all so beautiful and organized, I had a great night. Around 6:30 in the morning I got my suit ready and I went to the beach where all the teams were having technical reviews. When I arrived to the starting line I felt so proud because people in Perú recognized me and because I was there supporting the competitors in the name of Colombian coffee since they represent the same values coffee growers have in the country.

That day was really exciting, we walked through the corridors where they were having the technical tests to the cars, trucks, quad bikes and motorcycles; the huge and powerful trucks were impressive. Is unbelievable to think those vehicles have to pass through the dessert because it´s a very hard job. Here, I also met a few Colombians that were going to participate with motorcycles in the competition and I also had the chance to meet the Dakar director. Afterwards, we walked through the place where the Café de Colombia vehicle was ready for the rally, and it caught my attention how people were looking for me to say hi regardless of their nationality, a nice camaraderie feeling was in the environment.

When I got back to Colombia I found out that Juan Manuel Linares and Andrés Campuzano had got off the rally because of a mechanical failure and they couldn´t finish. But that event made me remember all the times that no matter how much effort you put into things there are still factors out of our control that can affect results. But we still have the perseverance and audacity of these competitors who I´m sure will be back trying at the next lap.

Unfortunately I didn´t had time to go out and get to know Perú, since it was my first time in that country, but I want to go back and know more about it because I know it is a really pretty place. However, I enjoyed so much the little time I got to spend in the Dakar Rally. Being with the Colombian contestants motivates me to keep on doing things right and to support the people  that share the same values as our Colombian coffee growers.

Ya falta poco para que se acabe el año y aunque me da un poco de nostalgia el fin de esta etapa también es un buen momento para recordar las cosas buenas y dar gracias por todo lo que se tiene y se logró.

Para este año tengo que agradecer como siempre por la salud que tengo, también por el apoyo de mi familia porque sin ellos como soporte y ayuda, mi trabajo en los cafetales no sería igual. Además este año la cosecha y el clima mejoró mucho al del año pasado.  Agradezco por mis amigos por su apoyo incondicional en las buenas y en las malas, y también por el café que es lo que me ha dado todo lo que tengo, incluyendo la posibilidad de viajar por el mundo.

Para el próximo año espero tener más y mejor cosecha que la que tuve este año, quiero conocer nuevos lugares y poder llevar el café de Colombia a todos los rincones del mundo.

Este fin de año espero pasarla bien con mi familia y cumplir todo lo que me proponga para el próximo año. Cuéntenme, ¿cuáles son sus propósitos para el 2013?

Happy 2013

The year is almost over and even though I am nostalgic about the end of it this is also a good time to remember nice things and to be thankful for all I have achieved.

In this year I must thank for the good health that I got. Also for the support of my family because without their help my work in the coffee farm wouldn’t be the same. Besides this, there was a good harvest and a much better weather comparing to last year’s. I am thankful for my friends and their support in the good and bad times, and I´m also grateful for coffee which has given me all of what I got including having the chance to travel around the world.

For the next year I hope to have a bigger and better harvest than the one I had this year, I want to meet new places and be able to take Colombian coffee to all the corners of the world.

I hope I have a great time on New Year’s Eve with my family and that I achieve everything I put my mind into for next year. Tell me, what are your plans or new year’s resolutions?

Ya llegó diciembre de nuevo  y esta es la época que me pone más contento, no sé si es por el clima, las decoraciones, las fiestas o hasta la cosecha en esta época. Lo que sí sé es que la Navidad saca lo mejor de mí.

Lo que más disfruto de esta temporada son las reuniones en familia; ya empezamos las novenas y me ha tocado trabajar muy duro para terminar temprano y poder llegar a celebrar con todos y cantar los villancicos, pero eso es lo que hago con tal de estar un buen tiempo con todos.

Estoy muy entusiasmado porque también tengo la fiesta del 24 donde voy a celebrar la víspera de Navidad. Ahí sí que nos vamos a divertir porque nos reunimos no sólo la familia sino también los vecinos cafeteros y comemos lo de siempre: natilla, buñuelo, café caliente y a veces comemos pavo o marrano.  Es todo un banquete lo que comemos en las celebraciones.  Al final todos nos quedamos contando historias y cantando, e incluso hablando de lo que nos une: el café.

Y así les cuento que estoy muy entusiasmado en estos días, ya empezaron las tradiciones acá y si no me encuentran en novenas estoy en el cafetal; ¡casi ni me queda tiempo para sentarme! Espero que todos disfruten de estas fiestas tanto como yo. Cuéntenme ¿qué planes tienen para estas navidades?

Christmas is here!

December is here again and this is a time that gets me really happy.  I don´t know if it is because of the weather, the decorations, the parties or even the harvest of this time. What I do know is that Christmas brings out the best in me.

What I enjoy the most about the season are the family reunions, we already started what we call the “novenas” that are celebrated 9 days before Christmas.  I have to work hard to be able to finish early to celebrate and sing Christmas carols, but that’s what I have to do to spend quality time with everyone.

I am very excited because I also have a party the 24th where we celebrate Christmas Eve. That´s when we really have fun because is not only family but coffee grower neighbors who celebrate with us and eat natilla , buñuelo a hot cup of coffee and sometimes turkey or pork. Is quite a big menu for the celebrations. In the end we all stay singing or telling stories, and we even talk about what brings everyone together: coffee.

So, as I told you, I´m very excited these days. The season’s traditions already started here and if I´m not in the “novenas” I´m in the farm, so I don´t even have time to sit down!  I hope everyone enjoys their holidays as much as I do. I want to know, what are your plans for Christmas this year?

Les cuento que esta semana estuve en Estrasburgo en la sesión de aprobación del TLC con la Unión Europea acompañando a la delegación colombiana en este día tan decisivo. Todo el viaje en general fue un corre corre, como le decimos aquí. Primero se nos retraso un poco el vuelo pero finalmente salimos de Colombia hacía Frankfurt y llegamos casi a media noche al destino final. Salimos al hotel que quedaba en un pueblo en una zona montañosa, el clima era bastante frío e incluso tuve la oportunidad de ver por segunda vez la nieve caer, la verdad estaba encantado porque ese clima me gusta mucho.

Al día siguiente nos tocó madrugar y salir al Parlamento Europeo. Estar al lado del embajador de Colombia fue un poco tensionante porque estábamos ante la expectativa que fuera favorable.

Luego se aprobó el TLC con Colombia y yo sentí una alegría que hasta saqué mi bandera que tengo en el carriel en representación no sólo del país, sino también de los cafeteros colombianos que podemos vernos beneficiados con este acuerdo.

Cuando se terminó la sesión nos fuimos al hotel con un poco de hambre, frio y cansancio para madrugar al día siguiente y volar a Colombia, pero todo era por representar a los cafeteros colombianos, a nuestro producto y a nuestro trabajo. La alegría que tengo es incomparable porque se notó el esfuerzo del país y  al final dio resultado.

A new accomplishment for coffee growers!

A couple of days ago I was with the Colombian delegation in Strasbourg at the session for the approval of the free-trade agreement (FTA) between Colombia and the European Union. The whole trip was a rush, the flight got delayed but we finally flew to Frankfurt and got to our final destination at midnight. We head up to the hotel that was near a highland; the weather was really cold and I even had the chance to see for the second time in my life snow falling. I was delighted because I really enjoy that kind of weather.

The next day we all had to wake up and go to the European Parliament. Being next to the Colombian ambassador was a little nerve wracking because we were expecting the approval of the FTA.

After it was approved I felt the joy all over me and pulled out the Colombian flag I have in my carriel, representing not only my country but also us coffee growers which can be benefited from this agreement.

When the session was over we head out to the hotel starving, cold and tired to get some rest to wake up  early the next day and fly to Colombia. But this didn’t mattered because  it was all to represent  the coffee growers, our product and our work. The happiness in me is  huge because the effort the country made gave positive results.
