La caficultura, una relación con la naturaleza

Una de las cosas que deben ser prioridad para nosotros los cafeteros es cómo podemos producir nuestro café de forma amigable con el medio ambiente. Yo me he puesto en esa tarea y la verdad es que hay mucho que podemos hacer.

Lo primero, conservar los recursos naturales y proteger la biodiversidad en nuestros fincas. Por ejemplo en la mía trato de proteger muy bien un nacimiento de agua que tengo sembrando árboles alrededor y asegurándome que no se contamine con basura.
En la producción trato de no usar muchos químicos, pero  en algunos casos cuando hay que fumigar y usar fertilizantes me aseguro de recoger los envases y los plásticos. Esas cosas se demoran muchísimos años en degradarse y como tienen residuos pueden contaminar.

Para el cuidado del medio ambiente también hemos recibido ayuda de la investigación. Una de las tecnologías más importantes con la que contamos en el beneficio del café es el Becolsub. Como ustedes saben para procesar el café de Colombia necesitamos agua; esta tecnología logró reducir de 40 a 1 litro la cantidad de agua que se necesita para beneficiar 1 kilo de café. Además, para que el beneficio sea realmente ecológico también debemos hacer un buen manejo de los subproductos, que después, convertidos en abono volverán a la tierra.

Estos son solo algunos ejemplos de cómo los cafeteros colombianos estamos trabajando para proteger nuestra tierra y producir un café de excelente calidad y bueno con el medio ambiente.

 

Coffee production, a relationship with nature

One of the things that should be a priority for us is to produce our coffee in an environmentally friendly way. I’ve put into this task and the truth is that there are a lot of things we can do.

 

First, conserving natural resources and protecting the biodiversity on our farms. For example I try to protect very well a natural water fount in my farm by planting trees around it and making sure it doesn´t  get contaminated with garbage. In the production I try to avoid using a lot of chemicals, but in some cases when I have to fumigate and use fertilizer I make sure I collect all the containers and plastics. These things take many years to degrade so they contaminate by all the waste they left.

We have also received research support to take care of the environment. One of the most important technologies we count with in the coffee Beneficio is the Becolsub. As you know we need water to produce Colombian coffee and this technology has reduced the amount of water needed to make this process to 1kg of coffee from 40 to 1 liter. Besides to make the Beneficio process truly ecologic we must make good use of by-product that later on will turn into fertilizer and get back to earth.

These are just some examples of how Colombian coffee growers are working to protect our land and produce a high quality coffee that is good for the environment.
